Whole Foods-Clean Eating Part 2


What are whole foods?


 "Foods that are unprocessed and unrefined, or processed and refined as little as possible, before being consumed. Whole foods typically do not contain added salt, carbohydrates, or fat. Examples of whole foods include unpolished grainsbeans, fruits, vegetables, and animal products, including meats and non-homogenized dairy products. Although originally all human food was whole food..."(wikipedia) 

The goal of clean eating is to put real whole food in your body, such as all vegetables, fruits, meats, nuts, and beans.These foods feed your body what it needs to function at it's highest level.

Our body isn't designed to digest artificial, man-created ingredients.

"Organically grown fruits and vegetables. Grass-fed beef. Organic free-range chicken. Ocean-caught fish, whole grains. Nuts, beans seeds. These are foods your body recognizes from way back. In fact, your body knows what to do with every part of these foods, what nutrients get sent to what part of the body, and most important, what foods turn on (or off) which hormones. These foods make sense to your body." (Jillian Michaels, Master Your Metabolism)

When we eat processed foods our bodies don't know what to do them. It disperses them to various organs and then the rest is stored as fat.

When you are shopping look at the list of ingredients on a package. It should have very few words and you should be able to pronounce every single one.

No long, hard to speak words, no hydrogenated this or that. No food coloring, preservatives and natural colors or flavors.

All of these fake ingredients have been associated with the increase in hypertension, adhd, inflammation, allergies...the list goes on. Read more here.


We eat so many processed and fast food items we are making ourselves sick. The food industry doesn't care about us, they care about their bottom line-money.

They have lobbyist's in the government to ensure they are able to continue what they are doing. Most of our legal food ingredients here are illegal in other countries due to health concerns.

Say what?! Yep!

Our foods, like anything else have to be something we take a closer look at. You wouldn't take someone else's word for what the Bible says, don't do it with your food.

Do your research.

It's always our choice.

Action Step: Purge the pantry. Go through and read ingredients, if you don't recognize or can't read them. Get rid of them! Donate to a food pantry. Add some whole foods to your grocery list this week.

Jesus Loves The Nobodies

I’m a very ordinary girl…woman.

Really I am. There has never been anything extraordinary about me or my life. I’m not beautiful or all that smart. I’ve struggled with my self-perception my entire life - I’m either too fat, too skinny, too much of this or not enough of that.

I’m very ordinary and well aware of it.

Most of my life God was the big man in the sky who I prayed to when I needed something. Or confessed to when I felt guilty and needed forgiveness.

After I had my daughter, all of that changed because I wanted more than a Sunday relationship with Him. 

I wanted to know my Heavenly Father. I wanted to know the God who came as one of us, who slept, ate, 
and died…like us. I wanted to know how to love Him and be more of what He wanted me to be.

Whatever that was...

What's Up With Our Food Today? Clean Eating Part 1





I was first introduced to the idea of eating clean after I was trying to figure out why I was gaining weight even though I was counting calories and eating low fat, low calorie foods and working out.

My normal way of dieting wasn't working anymore. Blood work from my labs were normal (later I found out this wasn't necessarily true)

So what else could it be?

My food.

If it was fast, cheap, and easy I bought it. Bonus if it was on sale and  I could use a coupon ! (Think Extreme Couponer from TLC)


If I wasn't so desperate to lose weight and feel good I'm not sure I would have made the effort to do the research and spend so much time reading up on our current food system.

For instance I found out...


  • The cows and chickens we eat are being kept in horrendous conditions-hence the increase in mad cow disease, e coli, and listeria. Read more here.
  • Our fruits and veggies are ripe year round-used to be certain foods were in season and other's were not-things that make you go, hmmm (we'll talk more about genetically modified foods later).
  • The difference between wild caught fish and farm raised.


Clean eating forced me to educate myself on what was in my food.

If I could give you one piece of advice, don't wait until your health forces you to make healthy choices.

Make the change now.

Our foods have changed so much they are not considered real food anymore. They sure taste good though, but we eat these things at the expense of our health. I love Doritos's just as much as the next girl, but you won't find them in my pantry.

When you know better, you do better.

Eating clean has been one important piece of the puzzle for my body to heal. And it has saved us a ton of
money in doctor visits!

Health and Fitness Series Introduction



I hope everyone had a rest-filled, peace-filled holiday. I am back, to hopefully a more routine-for-me blogging schedule. If not I know the world won't end ;)

I wanted to start the New Year off with a health and fitness series. Since so many of us make diet resolutions this information may be useful for some.

And, since there are many people whom have no idea what eating clean is, I thought I would do a series devoted to the topic of Health and Wellness. Sharing some of the things I've learned along the way, such as my favorite food/health websites and beauty secrets.

If you've been around here long, you know that a series, other than doing the 31 days with Nester last year, just isn't my thing. Since health is something I am passionate about I think I can stick with it! :)

Once a week for the next month (on Fridays) we will cover a different topic and I'll challenge you with a "action step", I hope you learn some new things and come away from this with a new perspective about your health.

At the end of the series I have some exciting news I want to share with you. Something I've been contemplating for a while but really feel God nudging me forward to (I think it's because it's out of my comfort zone, and He LOVES to make me uncomfortable ;)). 

So in the spirit of living brave in 2015 I'm going for it! But I'll save it for the end :)

I started my healthy eating journey five years ago. I was gaining weight despite working out hard every day and counting calories. I was desperate to figure out what was going on.

I had learned a little about eating clean and starting taking a closer look at where my food came from and what was in it after watching, Food Inc, a very enlightening documentary. You should watch it.

I wondered if eating clean was the answer I was looking for, so while wandering through the local library in Iowa, I picked up Eat Clean Diet, by Tosca Reno and took it with me on our annual beach trip.

Our eating habits haven't been the same since. I was so intrigued and horrified by the information I read and by what I'd been eating and how it could be effecting my body.

I came home and got rid of everything that was boxed aka processed. If I didn't know what an ingredient was or couldn't make it myself we didn't eat it. This is actually when I truly learned to cook. I had to start making our favorite foods from scratch. Which wasn't as hard as I thought it would be and tasted just as good-even better! Fresh is always better.

I've learned a lot over the years. There were many days of begging and crying to God to make me well, but now I know I needed this journey to teach me, show me what it really looks like to live well, the way He intended.

We aren't made to be overweight, tired, diseased, we are made to live well, full lives. Taking care of ourselves is the only way we can run the race He's given us, why are we wasting time?

Verse, Not Word





Hello Friends! Long time, I know!

To catch you up with what's been going on in my neck of the woods-I moved!! Yep, but this time I stayed in the same town. We had been renting a condo until our home sold in Texas and until we could find a home for us here. Well, we did. We closed on our new home early December and started the grueling task of moving everything ourselves-ugh!! (If you plan on moving yourself, please for the love of everything good in this world save your back, your time, and your energy and don't buy a home with stairs!)

We got everything moved in and before we knew it, it was Christmas time, then New Years, and well, time has a way of stopping when everyone is on break and then when it's over you wonder where the time went.

I've missed you and this space and having been praying a lot over not only the direction of this blog but my life in general. I'm getting glimpses here and there and it's exciting to know God has a purpose and plan for my life. I just want it to happen NOW, you know? But wait I must and so I will.

Have you picked a word for 2015 yet?

I've thought a lot about it and could not settle on one word, instead I'm going for a verse this year.

Deuteronomy 31:6 keeps popping up and with what the future may or may not hold, I think it will be a good verse for me to remember and hold tight to.

"Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them (insecurities, doubts, fears, naysayers) for the Lord your God goes with you, He will never leave you nor forsake you." (Deuteronomy 31:6, NIV)

One of my goals for the New Year is to stay more focused on God and what He's saying to me. To be grounded in His word and who He says I am.

The more I focus on Him the less afraid I will be to run my race. The more I stop trying to look so far into the future and focus on what's in front of me each day, the less afraid I will be to keep moving.

Also,I have a new series gearing up next week that I'm really excited about and hope you will join me as I dive into the topic of health, healing, and fitness. This is one of the things I feel God has laid on my heart for the new year and want to share all I have learned with you and still learning.

**I want to leave you with this song. I'm sure you've heard it but the truths ring loud and clear. I pray as we make our way through another year we will look less and less like this world and more like Him. Look to Him for our direction, strength, and wisdom.

"Turn your eyes upon Jesus, Look full in His wonderful face, And the things of earth will grow strangely dim, In the light of His glory and grace."
