What is GMO?(or “genetically modified organisms”)- Living organisms whose genetic material has been artificially manipulated in a laboratory through genetic engineering, or GE. This relatively new science creates unstable combinations of plant, animal, bacteria and viral genes that do not occur in nature or through traditional crossbreeding methods.
Most of our corn, soybeans and wheat are genetically modified. This means science is creating new versions of our foods, by adding a gene from one species and a gene of a different species and viola-new super fruit that can withstand harsh weather conditions and take muuuuch longer time to go bad ( that's not all the science behind it, but it's the gist of it).
When scientists decided to start experimenting with our foods, they had a good reason behind it. To help save starving countries.
Unfortunately, after years of eating genetically modified foods we are seeing consequences of what science can do, and it's not good. Only recently have there been testing to find out exactly what gmo's are and what/if there are any healthy hazards to be concerned about.
American Academy of Environmental Medicine position paper states, "Several animal studies indicate serious health risks associated with GM food," including infertility, immune problems, accelerated aging, insulin regulation, and changes in major organs and the gastrointestinal system."(Responsible Technology)
Why I think you should stay away from genetically modified foods?
Like you, I've always taken for granted that the food I purchase at the grocery store is safe. Why else would they legally be able to sell it to the American public, right?
As long as it tastes good, looks good, and as long as they can easily market and manipulate consumers, they sell products and make lots and lots of money.
Have you recognized the increase in infertility in seemingly healthy adults? The increase in autoimmune diseases (rheumatoid arthritis, thyroid disease, MS, diabetes, bowel problems-crohn's, ulcerative colitis) and cancer?
I have to think there is a link between our foods and health. Will we never eat a genetically modified food again? Nope, our diets will never be perfect. I'll always do my best within my budget and if I happened to eat a non-organic apple or something that is gmo I won't freak out.
All we can do is our best.
Action Step- Read the little labels on your fruits and veggies. Decide today to trade out one or two pieces of produce for organic.
Do you have any questions on GMO's?
