I was first introduced to the idea of eating clean after I was trying to figure out why I was gaining weight even though I was counting calories and eating low fat, low calorie foods and working out.
My normal way of dieting wasn't working anymore. Blood work from my labs were normal (later I found out this wasn't necessarily true)
So what else could it be?
If it was fast, cheap, and easy I bought it. Bonus if it was on sale and I could use a coupon ! (Think Extreme Couponer from TLC)
If I wasn't so desperate to lose weight and feel good I'm not sure I would have made the effort to do the research and spend so much time reading up on our current food system.
For instance I found out...
- The cows and chickens we eat are being kept in horrendous conditions-hence the increase in mad cow disease, e coli, and listeria. Read more here.
- Our fruits and veggies are ripe year round-used to be certain foods were in season and other's were not-things that make you go, hmmm (we'll talk more about genetically modified foods later).
- The difference between wild caught fish and farm raised.
Clean eating forced me to educate myself on what was in my food.
If I could give you one piece of advice, don't wait until your health forces you to make healthy choices.
Make the change now.
Our foods have changed so much they are not considered real food anymore. They sure taste good though, but we eat these things at the expense of our health. I love Doritos's just as much as the next girl, but you won't find them in my pantry.
When you know better, you do better.
Eating clean has been one important piece of the puzzle for my body to heal. And it has saved us a ton of
money in doctor visits!
